LeADERS is an Old Dominion University specific initiative that helps students discover courses and experiences to fully develop a wide array of skills and concepts applicable to their career after graduation. LeADERS is an acronym for “Learning through Active Discovery, Engagement, Reflection, and Showcase." and each capital letter stands for a different curricular area highlighted below. The LeADERS program also provides students with the opportunity to learn hands-on, called experiential learning. At ODU, we define it as “the process of applying knowledge to practice in a relevant setting.” I was drawn to ODU’s LeADERS program because I knew it would push me as a student to get the most out of my education and broaden my scope. I was particularly interested in Leadership, Diversity, and Research/Writing as these are essential competencies for any successful business professional to acquire.
Through these experiences, students learn to:
•serve as leaders in both formal and informal capacities •apply disciplinary knowledge in professional settings •appreciate diversity and perspectives other than their own •seek out innovation and creative solutions to problems •create new knowledge and share it with the world •use their knowledge and skills to improve their community
